I thought a triptych with 10x10 inch panels would be fun because it could be more like a mural or the canvases could be separated and hung up in different places around the baby's room. The ground lines match up and the tree branches extend from one canvas into the next. It was a lot of fun creating these. I tried to incorporate pink as much as possible which means I ate a lot of cereal with strawberries in it...no complaints here mmmm :)
Enjoy!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 140px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Q6TSleW79lo/TS3DD-h_e-I/AAAAAAAAAUY/XGHAyncWbpQ/s400/Laura%2BCamerona%2BCommission_edited-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561315587965025250" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 317px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Q6TSleW79lo/TS3DrJGFgYI/AAAAAAAAAUg/iL38Ul4Z6bA/s320/100_2468.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561316260815667586" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 319px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Q6TSleW79lo/TS3D5tRJcnI/AAAAAAAAAUo/3X7h9ge4Sug/s320/100_2465.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561316511043908210" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 318px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Q6TSleW79lo/TS3EE6V3LYI/AAAAAAAAAUw/uHRvmZiJWwc/s320/100_2466.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5561316703531904386" />

I Geek Art Fair!

Come see me on Friday, September 24th and Saturday, the 25th at the Des Moines downtown public library for I Geek Art Fair during the Art Stop!! These have a bit of bas relief, just like my paintings. Typically, wall decals are flat on the wall and vinyl. However, I wanted to stick to the theme of stacking and using recycled cereal boxes to make them. I applied them on the wall above a vase in my house and liked the look. I'll be making more to sell as magnets and these decals will be in packages of 3 or 4 for sale as well. Yay decals!

Seahorse Numero Uno

A friend of mine commissioned a piece to be displayed in her new office. Her only request was that there be a seahorse in the painting. It's funny, we both thought seahorses were imaginary animals like a unicorn but found out they were real once we saw them at a zoo! They are weird but very cool little creatures and apparently tasty. Every time I see a travel show about a country in Asia, these are in the street vendors line up of interesting things to eat on a stick! I'll pass. Anywho, this is my first attempt at a seahorse and I'm pleased with how it came out. I'll be making more of them for sure. Listening to the advice of another friend, I will also be making more sea/ocean life creatures with my cereal boxes. This painting is a 12x12. I really liked working with this size. One of my besties is having twin boys and I'm super excited for her and her husband. I offered to make a couple of paintings that she could either put them up or just have them as a keepsake for the boys. She suggested animals like lions and zebras so here are my variations. The deep edges are painted as well. I used a palette knife to paint the zebra's background. I hope the boys like them one day! She recently moved into an office space where she has actual walls. Lauren asked me to come up with something for her new space. She suggested something on a larger scale so the space doesn't swallow the artwork up. I had purchased three 10x10 canvases with a deep edge (my fave) that were on clearance this summer during the Des Moines Artstop. I thought using the three as a triptych (the groundlines match up) or spread out as three separate pieces would be fun and could be rearranged if preferred. There are three different birds along with a small porcupine in the bottom corner. One of the birds is my take on a peacock, another is a giraffe/flamingo like animal. The bowerbird is Lauren's favorite bird and this one was the most fun to make. This bird is super smart. It's like a little architect and builds its home using colors that are all similar. If anything takes a piece of its home while it's out looking for more materials, it notices and has a full on tantrum! It's a pretty smart and cool bird.

A New Use for Things in the Plumbing Aisle!

So, I've been looking for a way to use colored chalkboard paint that I've been eying for a while. I took an old God-awful dresser from the 70's that used to be in my parent's living room (sorry parents) and repainted it using gray semigloss and some blue chalkboard paint! I think my dad's original intention was to create a rustic antique look with all that yellow, not my fave however. It may have looked better when I was a kid but I seriously doubt it. Since I had taken over my kitchen with art materials I needed another space and place to put all of my supplies. I created a small studio space in my newly renovated living room and turned this dresser into my studio cart. I took off the old handles and replaced them with something unconventional and industrial. I strolled the plumbing aisle at Home Depot (one of my favorite things to do) and found these steel half circles that I think were used to hold piping down or onto a surface. They looked like drawer pulls to me! I really love taking things and using them for something other than what they were intended. It's also fun to weird out the person helping you at the hardware store, however I do get some cool people who really get into it! So, I painted the front of the drawers with the chalkboard paint and added white casters on the bottom. I really love this piece and I hope it will help me keep my supplies more organized! (The white paint on the yellow is me getting antsy and jumping right in before I actually take before pics : )

Out with the old, in with the new...well new-used

I've been busy renovating my house since summer. I had all of this old furniture from the 70's that I was about to give away but instead decided to give most of the pieces a new life. Here's one. This was an old coffee table my dad used. I've always hated this thing and thought it was ugly but now I love it. I hand painted the flowers and trim on top of the gray. I have a second table that needs the same kind of makeover. I've got some ideas in mind so stay tuned.

Layers

All summer long I've been working on renovating/making over my house. I finished my bedroom, the bathroom and painted my kitchen "borrowing" some great ideas from designspongers along the way. I spent some time traveling as well. Now that I am back into the teaching world and the weather is getting chilly I now have more time to work on making more art. I am in the midst of ordering more canvas, watching for those sales on dickblick! My goal is to start promoting my work around town a little more. I am so antsy that I can't work consistently on something to save my life. I have high production weeks and months as well as very low production times. Just my nature I suppose. Well, these little ditties are fun to make so I can't wait to get back into my art. I am brainstorming new little creatures as well. Until next time : )

Oh Happy Day! My brother, his girlfriend and I literally just missed Obama and his daughters at The Dairy Godmother today in Del Ray (Alexandria, Virginia)! Apparently, we were at Cheesetique across the street while they were getting some ice cream. We went to get ice cream right after they stopped in. Some people outside were talking about their visit. The girl behind the counter in the back left served me too. We then went into another little art store where the owner confirmed the sighting and was asking if we saw the Pres and his daughters. So close!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://aisle3studio.blogspot.com/2009/06/oh-happy-day-obama-sighting.html' title='Oh Happy Day! I've been super busy working on as many paintings and sculptures to sell at my very first show, the Ankeny, Iowa Green Fest! A little humid and windy at first (as you can tell my my wonky hair) but the sun came out later and it was beautiful. I was more excited than in my picture! That image is the result of my mother taking 3 minutes to take a picture with my cell phone! You just press one button, I don't get the problem haha. Gotta love her. I just completed my show today and had a blast!! I think this will be addicting. It was nice to see people respond well to my new work, I'll be a busy bee in July making more paintings. I nearly sold out, which was very unexpected. I also made my first trade with another couple selling pottery in the booth near me. I think that was one of the highlights. They were just such nice people and they kept telling others to come check out my work! Seriously, could you ask for better neighbors? The customers were equally friendly with nice comments. Overall it was a beautiful and successful day!
Here are a few things I learned during my first show. Be prepared to set up on either grass or cement. I thought we were setting up on cement/parking lot but when I got there everyone was setting up on grass. It was a bit windy at first and I didn't bring any stakes for my canopy! Lesson learned. Always be prepared for either with weights for the tent or stakes for grass. I was lucky, the canopy I bought held up wonderfully without stakes. It was even on sale, score! Second, I brought some items that blew over if they caught just a little wind, so I need to rework those ideas if I bring them to another outdoor show. I can't even count how many times I had to reposition these items. Lastly, I think I would like to make a professional looking sign for my canopy. I saw one a few booths down from me and thought it made the artist seem more professional and legit.
Can't wait for my next show. Time to go order a bunch more canvases and get crackin!

Three by Three

More new work today! Who knew old cereal boxes could look so pretty? The squares actually take less time than the circles because I can measure and cut pretty simply. The circles are a free for all haha. These have that newspaper woven basket look that I see in my bowlflowers and wallflowers. With the bowlflowers I am conscious of color and pattern but with these I am not using color in a specific way. Both are very much about color, pattern, and texture. I'm really just trying to make something aesthetically pleasing in 3 dimensional forms out of a 2 dimensional objects. I would like to make a 3 dimensional sculptural piece without the canvas as a backing. More to come : )

And We're Back

So, as you can tell from my last blog entry that I have been MIA for over a month. Taking winter break to a new level I guess. I have been busy however, developing some new pieces, working on prints for a print exchange, filling up a sketchbook for a gallery tour, and filling out paper work to be a substitute teacher this semester now that I am only teaching in the mornings. Hopefully subbing will lead to a full time job once again since I up and left my old one in Fairfax, VA. C'mon suburbs of Des Moines, show some love! So, I used to teach my elementary students different cut paper techniques and I should mention that they taught me some cool ones as well. I also showed them how to make cut paper butterfly molas that required layering paper that would be cut smaller and smaller each time revealing some of the underlying color. At the time I did a little bit of research and there are a lot of artists that do this in a number of ways, with different colors and patterns. One artist stacked paper and cut away at it to look like a topographical map. Another, one of my faves, Jen Stark uses stacks of paper that she cuts into. I guess this is my homage to what some of these artists do. I would like to take mine even further, making sure to completely make it my own and just using these artists as inspiration. I used rectangles and circles cut from cardboard cereal, cracker and tissue boxes to reveal some of the color and mostly texture. I would also like to keep symmetry and repetition in numbers in these peices. In this piece I used the number 3, three circles, three rectangles. Most people don't know this about me but when I was a kid I had these little ticks, like a lot of kids do. I used to clear my throat and make little sounds in 3's, take 10 steps and count again in 10's. The number 10 is actually my favorite number to this very day, huh : ) This is how my first one came out but I think for my next piece I would like to take a saw to the bigger stacks and cut sections out or cut them in half to reveal the inside. I thought about weaving strips on top of strips too. I believe I will expand on my original wallflower idea through cardboard layers as well. Ok, well it's bye for now and I promise to not go missing for another month : ) Toodles

Gingerbread House Fun!

Last night I was invited to a gingerbread house making party. It was so much fun. I was told to bring the pre-made kits they sell at the grocery and craft stores but hey, I'm an Art Teacher, man! They might take away my Art Teacher badge of awesomeness if I bought any kind of kit. I also decided that I was not going to make the traditional gingerbread house. Oh no. I set out to create my own inspired by the great architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. This was going to be a modern style gingerbread house. So I compiled chocolate grham crackers, frosting, boston baked beans, good n' plenty, and fruit by the foot! I used the good n' plenty candy for a cool tiled roof. The boston baked beans, which I loved to eat as a kid, were used as cobblestones. If you don't know, boston baked beans are a candy coated peanut that I used to buy at the gas station up the street from me on my walk home from school. The fruit by the foot, which is made really weird nowadays, was used as super modern striped paneling on the sides of the house. However, the other gingerbread house goers thought it looked more like bacon, haha. I agree. I just used frosting to "glue" everything together and it seemed to work really well. The way I situated the grham crackers made a nice skylight on the roof that I left open. I think if I were to go further I would make a stained glass (sugar candy glass) window panel. Maybe next year. For now, it is sitting on top of my toaster oven. Every time I walk by it I think of Frank Lloyd Wright, and also think about taking a bite : )

Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act

So, on February 10, 2009 independent toy makers, crafters, jewelry makers, and clothing makers will have to have mandatory testing for lead and other health hazardous materials. It may sound like, oh this is so great, our Government is actually taking measures to protect children under 12 years of age from harmful poisons and chemicals but there's a catch that will prove to be detrimental to the incomes and careers of many independent crafters all over this country. I get it, if I had a kid I would want to protect my munchkin from any harmful toys and objects that they wear and play with. Here's the thing, this testing will cost $4,000 per item and for an independent crafter who may rely on what they sell as thier sole source of income, this will put them out of business. I think it's a complete blindsight of the Government and our legislature to not even take into account small businesses when it's these businesses that are extra careful to steer clear of using hazardous materials and contribute to the economy and the GNP (gross national product). We are the ones who have an exemplary record in safe, environmentally friendly products. I just don't get it. They say a lot of this is because of imports from China, well, hello quit importing from China until they meet the freaking guidlines! I've written to my Congressman and my Senators in the state of Iowa and I hope they will help make changes to this unfair law.

Throwing Bread and Talking to Myself

Now, since I check my site meter once in a while, I have come to realize that I'm basically talking to myself out here in the big old world of blogs. Oh and to my one friend/follower Nfall2rt checks it out once in a while, thanks Nfall2rt! That said, I would like to find a way to get more followers. I had more people reading visiting my art blog that I basically ignored for months on end. Am I boring? Is my biggest worry in life actually coming true, that according to my bro I'm the only one who thinks I'm funny? Thanks bro. Anywho, I'm going to continue to post if not only to amuse myself, which is my MO anyway : ) Maybe along the way I'll find a way to gain some readership.

Ok, on to the throwing bread part of the ramblings! Ever since I moved back to the great state of Iowa, I have been invited a number of times to Friday night dinners put on by a very kind family. I've been a few times since being back and must say i'ts always really fun. There are a lot of them and I think that makes it extra fun. Last night I decided to join them for dinner again and I've come to expect two things that will always happen at this dinner. 1. The Challah (a jewish twisted delicious bread) will be torn apart, dipped in salt and tossed to you like a baseball. You must catch it without letting it hit the full wine glasses on the table and you must aviod any of the salt flying to hit you in the eye! It's truly what I look forward to, so fun. And 2. The grandmother from Israel will always pull me aside, give me a kiss on each cheek and tell me I will find a man soon! Last night it was, "you will get married next month!" Hahaha, I think she's getting impatient! lol. But sadly no, I won't be getting married next month (sorry mom).

Something Old Something Blue

I wanted to post a large bowlflower I made about a year ago that got auctioned off at a charity in Albuquerque, New Mexico. If you notice, it's the giant image I have at the top of my blog. The thing was pretty big, about 17" x 17". That's a lot of cut up cardboard boxes. I've been making smaller more manageable ones lately but I think I would like to create a few bigger ones again. Since I am in a house now I actually have space to store these. I remember the dark blue outer layer was made mostly from old beer boxes my friends gave me. I left at 7:00 to go to a wine, cheese, and chocolate party a friend was having that I'd been looking forward to all week. I was having such a good time when my allergies started acting up because they have 3 cats. I totally forgot they had cats (haven't been over there in a while) and I was just dying because I didn't take an allergy pill. I'm really really sensitive. I was kind of embarrassed that I had to leave only 2 hours after the party when the wine was flowing and everyone was having a good time. My throat was closing up and I was sneezing all the way to my car. I just hate when allergies interfere with fun. Anywho, while I was there I had some awesome cheese and wine. It was funny, everyone went to the Gateway Market to get their cheese but no one brought the same cheese! I got assistance from the cheese man who was quite knowledgeable and kinda cute too! I personally brought prarie breeze cheese made from cow's milk. It was quite tasty! I do love cheese. In undergrad we were assigned to write a 3 page paper on anything we did over the summer, anything. I went to Italy and ate tons of cheese, and drank a lot of wine too. I love cheese so I wrote a paper on all the cheese I tasted and people thought I was crazy. I maintain it's a masterpiece to this very day : )

Check Out My Feature!

Thanks to www.dzfantasy.blogspot.com for doing a sweet feature on me for her blog! I use acrylic with a few cardboard petals incorporated into each painting. I bought some of these 4x12 maritime canvases and really kind of like the different size. This one is titled Cheerios because the yellow flower is mostly made from a Cheerios ceral box. I was going to name it riboflavin but I think I may have spelled it wrong. Is it rhiboflavin or riboflavin? Hmm, what is riboflavin anyway? Anyway, I think I'll be purchasing more of these and painting the triflowers. They can be hung vertical, horizontal, and in multi-panels!

I Want That

www.kalla.etsy.com, check out these awesome hand printed pillows! She is supercool!
Secondly, I've admired her work for some time as well. Nfall2rt creates handmade scarfs, pendants, giftcards, and these very cool purses! There are more pictures on her website and they look very professional using really beautiful colors. I really like the little buttons and pocket on the shoulder bag along with the vertical stripes. I could see myself taking that little wristy out for the afternoon. You must check out her scarfs too. They come in bold colorful stripes and look thick, wide, and long just like I like! You know how some people make scarfs that are super short and it looks like they gave up, Nfall2rt does not skimp on the yarn one bit. I live in Iowa and I would wear one of those bad boys any blizzardy day of the week!

New Painting

I began a new painting series inspired by the wallflowers and bowlflowers made from upcycled/recycled cereal boxes. I like the patterns and textures on these bowls and thought they might look fun as paintings too. I've incorporated a few of the actual cardboard petals, can you find them? This is an 8"x10" canvas and I would like to make some even bigger paintings showing many different layers and colors.

Art House Co-op Sketchbook Show

This summer I entered a show at the Art House Co-op in Atlanta and they posted a picture of most of the sketchbooks that were on display. Here are some of the entries. Mine is in the third row across and six down. The image is faint but it's a carved kayak on the front that shows the colored page behind it. It was really fun to make! I have signed up to participate in another sketchbook project with the Art House. This time they are taking the sketchbooks on a tour displaying them in galleries around the country! Pretty cool. The tour schedule is posted on their site, www.arthousecoop.com. I will post it here too when my sketchbook is complete and it gets closer to February 2009.

Finally on Etsy!!

I'm finally on Etsy!! For the last 3 or 4 years one of my best friends and her husband have their annual awesome Halloween parties that I have always missed because I lived a thousand miles away and since I moved back I actually get to attend this year! In past years I offered to send a life sized photo of myself as a stand in at the party. I always pictured other friends taking pictures with my stand in! But that never happened. I never actually blew up a life size photo of myself, instead I just longed for the coolest party in Des Moines. So, now that I'm back, i'm going all out...in wierdness that is. I tried to come up with something no one else would think of. One year I went to a Halloween party as Mary Katherine Gallager from SNL and the freaking amazing movie "Superstar" which was fun but not that innovative. I thought this year I would either go as the Redbox movie rental aparatus or a zen garden. The decision was held at bay for a while and made at the very last minute and you guessed it zen garden won! I'm basically hanging a foamcore board around my neck with velcroed rocks, glued down sandpaper, a mini Chinese pagoda and my very own handmade sand rake. That's right, i'm interactive! My guess is that i'll get some best costume award votes. Either that or the lamest costume in the room and who is that person who's never been to these parties before votes. The runner underneath it is just a piece of paper to create some fun textures and give the photo interest, hope it's not too busy. I use two types of special varnishes (environmentally friendly) that keep the bowl pretty sturdy and easy to wipe clean with a dry towel. I am down with the mini bowls, I must say. They are smaller and can fit on an office or computer desk standing above papers and other objects looking pretty while serving a function. Good stuff!

I Want That

AsbestosPress.etsy.com has some really cool silk screened prints. I want them! Each one is hand printed and really reasonably priced. The posters are made for various concert promotions and inspired by vintage graphics. I love this one called 60 Watt Kid that is a band in San Francisco that commissioned the artist to make the posters. I can't wait to see what else Asbestos Press will come up with. I'm also trying out some "green" images to celebrate trying to preserve the environment like using wind turbines. I used to drive up to Minneapolis and see all these wind farms at a distance. In my travels to Omaha this weekend I saw three wind turbine farms on the way and pretty close up too! They were really cool and alien-like somehow. It's as if we stumbled onto some alternate planet covered in huge wind turbines. They literally made up the landscape. I think we drove through wind turbine country because even large trucks passing were carrying these ginormous blades for the wind turbines!
